He was born in Tirsapol, studied at the Odessa School of Fine Arts (1886-1893).
In 1895 he was admitted to the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, in the landing of Ilia Repin, I. Shishkin, P. Kovalevsky and N. Kuznetsov. According to the painting technique, Repin considered Iulii Berșadschii as his disciple.
