Eleonora Romanescu was born on April 26, 1926 in Leușeni , Orhei County. His father, Dumitru Romanescu, lived in Chisinau at the beginning of the last century, worked as a tram driver and was married to a local woman. After participating in the First World War and losing a hand (he had been amputated in a hospital in St. Petersburg) he returned to Chisinau and studied at a church music school. He was assigned to the church in Leuseni village, but his first wife did not want to move to the village. He divorced and came alone to the village, he met the painter's mother, Maria Crăciun, who sang in the church choir. They got married, made a home, raised 6 children. The first works of fine art seen by the painter were some paintings hanging on the walls of the parents' house in some very vivid colors, some rural landscapes. They belonged to a professional painter from Chisinau named Remer. He was the brother of the painter's father's first wife.

The unforgettable impressions from his childhood are related to the agricultural works from Leuşenii in the 30s and 40s, of the last century. They were, according to the painter, hard work, but people turned them into ritual, giving them a festive look.

He studied at the Republican School of Fine Arts "I. Repin" in Chisinau. Starting with 1953, for 5 years she is a drawing teacher at the Pedagogical School from Orhei. In the period 1959-1964 - he attended restoration-painting courses at the Central State Workshops I. Grabari, Moscow. During the same period he was a restorer at the Art Museum in Chisinau.

His first paintings (still lifes) were presented at the exhibition of young artists in 1954. In 1958 he became a member of the Union of Visual Artists of the former USSR. He made his debut as a painter in 1960 with the painting "Sitting", followed by a series of paintings with static natures and portraits.

He restored at Răciula Monastery several icons, which were saved by the villagers from the fire, in the 60's, when the fight against religion was going on.

In 1976 he was awarded the State Prize for the "Homeland" cycle. In 1986 he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Republic of Moldova, in 1996 - Order of the Republic, Prize of the Union of Visual Artists of the Republic of Moldova.

He made numerous trips abroad (Armenia, Romania, the Far North, Mongolia, etc.) from where he always returned with sketches, after which he made several paintings: "Ararat", "In the port of Sevastopol", "Aieverher Mountains", "Siberian Landscape" etc.

The artist has works in private collections in the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Germany, Russia, France, the United States and Canada.

In 2013, for the achievements in culture and art, the painter Eleonora Romanescu was awarded the National Prize of the Republic of Moldova.
